Top Tips when visiting the Great Barrier Reef

Singles, couples and families will enjoy a day out on the Great Barrier Reef and combining this with quality Port Douglas accommodation makes for the ideal holiday.  Here are a few tips to ensure you make the most of your day on the reef.

1 –Sun Protection– the tropical environment of Port Douglas and out on the reef means the sun is hot and unprotected skin can be damaged within 15 minutes. Use a good quality SPF rated sunscreen (30+ is great) that is also waterproof and don’t forget to reapply at least every 4 hours.

2 – Hats and Sunglasses – the head and eyes also need protecting from the sun. A wide brimmed hat and good quality sunglasses will protect the eyes and delicate skin surrounding them. A long sleeved shirt and a sun protection rashie is also good to wear in and out of the water.

3 – Motion Sickness – sea sickness can ruin the perfect day out.  It is good to know that this can be totally prevented with over the counter medications. Kwells is fantastic and should be taken at least 30 minutes prior to departure.

4 – Protect yourself on the reef – Most operators will recommend that you wear wetsuits or stinger suits while on the reef especially during Summer. It is better to be safe than sorry even though it is unlikely you will be stung on the outer reef areas.

5 – Marine Wildlife – it is better to look and not touch. Sharks, eels, corals and fish are beautiful marine members but can be dangerous.  Enjoy from a safe distance at all times.

6 –Now is the perfect time – Anytime is perfect to visit the reef. Everyday is amazing and there is so much to see and explore.  Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ time, just get out there and make the very most of your day on the reef.
